The immigrants at Angel Island were often treated unfairly and detained for long periods of time in hard conditions. Immigrants went through interrogations that lasted hours and sometimes even days. The questions were detailed and immigrants prepared for months, family members already living in the US were sometimes even called to verify the answers.
Meanwhile, at Ellis Island, immigrants were treated more fairly, they were given a physical evaluation to check for diseases, and if they were suspected to have contagious ones they were quarantined. The inspectors asked reasonable questions and checked their documents. The interrogation didn't last long, and immigrants coming through Ellis island could start very quickly their new life.
Ellis Island was located on the eastern coast of the US and so immigrants were mostly Irish, Jewish, Italian, and polish. Angel Island was located on the western coast, and so immigrants were mostly Asian.
