Awareness campaign on the healthy disposal of protective masks
As part of the efforts to combat the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID19), the wearing of protective masks has become compulsory for all citizens authorized exceptionally to travel outside their homes. This will lead to massive use of these masks estimated at millions daily.
After their use, used masks represent a danger to the health of the population and the environment in general. Hence the need to dispose of them in a secure manner in order to limit the risk of spreading the virus between citizens and especially among cleaning staff.
In this context, the Ministry of Energy, Mines and the Environment - Department of the Environment, is launching a campaign to raise public awareness about the safe disposal of used masks, in particular by committing not to throw them into streets and public spaces; by disinfecting them with bleach or boiling water; by cutting them up before putting them in well-sealed household garbage bags and finally by washing your hands well with soap and water.
Cette campagne de sensibilisation comprend la diffusion d’une capsule de sensibilisation sur les chaînes de télévision, les stations de radio publiques et privées, sur les sites électroniques ainsi que sur les réseaux sociaux. Des affiches de sensibilisation relatives à cette problématique seront également éditées et diffusées en partenariat avec des acteurs du secteur privé (la grande distribution et le secteur pharmaceutique) et la société civile.
It should be noted that as part of the implementation of the National Household Waste Management Program (PNDM), the Department of the Environment is strengthening the coordination mechanism on this subject, through its central and regional directorates, with the central services of the Ministry of the Interior as well as the wilayas, prefectures and provinces. The objective is to monitor household waste collection and disposal operations as well as the disinfection of containers and public spaces. Local authorities and companies specializing in the management of household waste were also encouraged to raise the awareness of cleaning agents about the risks associated with waste,to provide them with the necessary tools and means of protection and to ensure the rigorous application of the rules of general hygiene.
