( J'"étais en train de" regarder ==> action qui était en train de se dérouler = prétérit be+Ving // cette action a été interrompue par la lumière qui s'est éteinte + ma peur ==> prétérit simple )

c. John was waiting ( wait) for the bus when he saw (see) an accident.

( J'attendais le bus ( "j'étais en train d'attendre le bus)==> action qui était en train de se dérouler = prétérit be + V-ing // quand j'ai vu l'accident ==> action qui interrompt = prétérit simple )

d. The thief sneaked  (sneak) into the house, stole (steal) the jewels and left (leave) without a trace.

( succession d'action qui ont eu lieu = prétérit simple )

e. As soon as I saw  (see) the accident, I called (call) the police.

( Dès que j'ai vu l'accident,  j'ai appelé la police ==> prétérit simple. On raconte des faits, pas des actions )

f. Last night, Alice was sleeping (sleep) when someone knocked  (knock ) on the door.

( Comme c. une action était en cours ( j'étais en train de dormir = prétérit be + V-ing ) elle a été interrompue : quelqu'un a frappé à la porte = prétérit  siimple )

g. Sorry, I didn't hear (not/hear) the doorbell, I was vacuuming ( vacuum) upstairs.

( Je n'ai pas entendu = prétérit  // je passais l'aspirateur ( j'étais en train de = prétérit be + V-ing )

( C'est "last night" = la nuit dernière, on aurait envie de mettre du prétérit simple mais : on nous indique "around 8 o'clock" = autour/ aux environs de 8 heures. Il faut donc utiliser le temps de la description du passé = prétériit be + V-ing )

( Quand le petit garçon s'est réveillé, il neigeait (" il était en train de neiger" )
