1) Our human mind is hardwired to be inquisitive. It derives satisfaction from gaining one extra bit of knowledge . As to why it is so? I believe a divine mix of luck and the following natural selection based on our ability to adapt to any situation or environment would have been it.What we already know might have been a source of satisfaction for us past, but it doesn't have any value in itself. So being the addicts that we are, we try to find the unknowns associated possibly in the same line as the unknown we uncovered in past, and then make it a point to uncover the new unknown(s). And since we understand so little of our universe right now, and we have so annoyingly short life, any thread of learning we start continues into a infinite set of unknowns and we spend our life knocking them out one by one, at least until we are knocked out by nature.
