P. D. James Biography :

Phyllis Dorothy James more commonly known as P. D. James is an author of crime and detective novels. She was born on 3rd August 1920 in Oxford, England, the oldest of three children, one younger brother and one yunger sister. Her parents, Sidney Victor, a tax official, and Dorothy May (Hone) James, moved to Cambridge, England, where Phyllis attended the Cambridge High School for Girls.

Phyllis had to leave school at age sixteen to work. The family did not have much money and her father did not believe in higher education for girls.She got a job in a tax office where she worked for 3 years and then as an assistant stage manager in a theater. She got married to Ernest Bantry White, an medical student, in 1941 when she was only 21 years old and had two children Clare and Jane. She had Clare in 1942 and Jane in 1944.

Ernest Bantry White became an army doctor but when White returned from the World War II (1939–45), he suffered from a mental illness and was not able to get a job. James was forced to provide for the whole family until her husband's death in 1964. James studied hospital administration and then worked at a hospital in London from 1949 to 1968.

In 1970 James passed an examination that qualified her for a government job. She eventually worked in the Crime section of the Home Office then she retired in 1979.

It was during the time she worked for the hospital board that she started writing. Her first novel was ‘Cover Her Face’ a detectivee story that was published in 1962. She wrote 13 more murder mysteries and other mystery novels she even wrote a dystopic novel and a poetry. She had a very good success writing her novels. She later died in Oxford, in 2014 at 94 years old.
