Oliver had to work because he was an ORPHAN.
.Poor children in the 19th century had to work to EARN MONEY to help
their families
.Some children were VERY POOR.
They HAD TO SWEEP chimneys with a broom, so they were COVERED in
black dirt and had to be very SMALL /TINY.

By 1880, all children aged 5 to 10 were ALLOWED to go to primary school.
( Avant 1880, l'école était payante, donc pas accessible aux enfants pauvres comme Oliver. Mais à partir de 1880 c'est devenu gratuit et obligatoire )
