THE HAUNTED CASTLE
One day, two men, Charles and Tom, and two women, Mary and Kate, went to the great forest of Broceliande to trek. Unfortunately, they got lost in the forest they tried to find the main path but in the dark night they couldn't. All of a sudden they heard a noise but with luck they met an old man, and Kate surprised them by saying: "You scared us but I am glad to know that we are not alone in this big and dark forest". And the old man offered them to sleep in his castle.
Facing the castle, which did not look very welcoming, the hikers were scared to death. Tom asked, "How long have you lived in this castle?" and the man replied, "I was born here, it was my grandparents' castle, then my parents' and now it's mine." The man welcomed them to his castle, then it was time for soup. The soup was a strange colour and looked weird, but the hikers remembered that they had always been told not to trust appearances, and despite this proverb Charles who doesn't hold his tongue exclaimed, "THE SOUP REALLY IS A STRANGE COLOUR!" At the table, the man who had welcomed them to the castle told them his story and that of the castle but this did not reassure the walkers. The castle was so big that each of the hikers had a room with a large bathroom.
In the middle of the night, when everyone was asleep, Mary felt a presence touching her feet. She woke up with a start and turned on the light, but there was no one there, so she turned off the light and went back to sleep. Then Charles heard the water from the gold tap in his bedroom bathroom which was pink: he woke up with great stress, went to his bedroom bathroom but no tap was running and yet the white bath was full so he emptied it and went back to bed. Later that night Kate heard someone in her room opening her big hiking bag, to get dressed and put on her make-up, when she turned on the light which was a yellowish colour she found her bag open with her toiletries on the floor and her clothes all over the place, but no one was there, everyone was fast asleep. Then suddenly Tom heard the creaking of old wooden floors, he got out of bed, turned on the light and found a fallen wooden stool with a rope hanging in his room, he was very frightened and ran to Charles screaming.
At 7.30am, at breakfast, the hikers told what they had seen. For the man who welcomed them to the castle, the facts were not abnormal. He explained that three years before, on the night of 13 March, his wife got out of bed and pretended to take a glass of water, went to take a bath, then dressed in a pretty dress, put on make-up and did her hair. Then she went to the room where Charles was sleeping and killed herself. The man in the castle is still in mourning: he doesn't understand why she did it and since that day, every 13th of the month, his spirit comes back and re-enacts that strange night. As the four friends leave the castle they say to each other, "We promise each other one thing, not to come back to this strange castle!"
