The 21st June is the National Aboriginal Day created in 1977, this day is to celebrate the heritage, cultural diversity and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in Canada. These people are the original inhabitants of the land that is now Canada however they were severely threatened by colonial forces. Still, Indigenous culture, language and social systems have shaped the development of Canada and continue to grow and thrive despite extreme adversity. The Inuit primarily inhabit the northern regions of Canada. Their homeland, known as Inuit Nunangat, includes much of the land, water and ice contained in the Arctic region. Métis peoples are of mixed European and Indigenous ancestry, and live mostly in the Prairie provinces and Ontario, but also in other parts of the country.

Essentially, culture refers to a people’s way of life - their ideas, values, customs and social behaviour. Different Indigenous nations have their own religious institutions and sacred practices. Also, culture includes things like the way they do weddings and funerals, the food they like to eat, the way they dress and the music theye like. Culture is passed down from generation to generation, and while cultural practices and beliefs change and evolve, many of the basic aspects remain the same "So even though we may dress differently from our grandparents and hold different religious or political beliefs, it’s likely there are elements of the way you live that can be traced back to them." These cultural elements have a strong influence on who they are, how they think about the world and how we operate in society.

Many Indigenous people in Australia have a unique view of the world that’s distinct from the mainstream. Land, family, law, ceremony and language are five key interconnected elements of Indigenous culture. For example, families are connected to the land through the kinship system, and this connection to land comes with specific roles and responsibilities which are enshrined in the law and observed through ceremony. Indigenous people have different way of thinking, for them, nothing is inanimate, everything is alive; animals, plants, and natural forces, all are energised by a spirit. As such, humans are on an equal footing with nature; are part of nature and are morally obligated to treat animals, plants and landforms with respect

Although there’s diversity amongst Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultures, land, family, law, ceremony and language actually play a crucial role in shaping all our lives, regardless of our culture or heritage. Identifying what this looks like in each people's own life can help us develop empathy with other and relate better to one another.
