African American civil right leader Malcolm X was a major twentieth-century
spokesman for Black nationalism. He believed in using more aggressive
measures in the fight for civil right. Malcolm X was born Malcolm Little
in 1925, in Omaha, Nebraska. During his early years, his family moved several
times because of racism . He was drawn to the neighbourhood’s street life.
He jumped into a criminal life that included gambling, selling drugs, and
burglary.
In 1946, Malcolm was sentenced to ten years in prison for burglary. While in
prison, he began to transform his life. In prison, his brother Reginald visited
him and told Malcolm about the Black Muslims. In addition to finding his new
religion while in prison, Malcolm began copying words from the dictionary
and developed the vocabulary that would help him become a passionate
and effective public speaker.
On a Sunday afternoon, February 21, 1965, Malcolm X was assassinated.
