Bonjour

a- What is the tense of the text ? When is the action happening ? Why ?

 Quel est le temps (conjugaison) du texte ? Quand se passe l'action ? Pourquoi ?

 The tense of the text is the past simple .

when  The action happened on 4th November, 2008.

why    This was the day of  Barack Obama's victory for the USA presidential election.

je ne sais pas si le "why" est pour "pourquoi" le 4 novembre ? ou "pourquoi" on utilise le past simple ????

Donc Why (the past simple) : We use the past simple to describe an action that started and ended in the past and is completly over. The election of Barack Obama took place in November 4th, 2008. This action  is now over so the past simple is used to talk about it.

Find three regular verbs in the past

I arrived  (to arrive)

I discovered (to discover)

I walked  (to walk)

Find 3 irrregular verbs in the past

I took  ( to take / took / taken)

They felt (to feel / felt / felt)

Obama made (to make/made / made )

How do you form the past simple of a regular verb ?

-You have to add -ed to the root of the verb => walk > walked

- Add only an -e only if the root already ends with an -e => live > lived

- if  the verb ends with consonant/vowel/consonant , then you must double the consonant = stop > stopped

- for verbs ending with a consonant + -y, you have to change  the y in -i < - ied ==> try > tried

- if ending vowel + y the y stays => stay > stayed // play > played
