Bonjour

can / be  able to

CAN indique la capacité, la possibilité, l'aptitude.

à la forme négative = can + not = cannot ou can't

can + Base verbale

BE ABLE TO  sera la formule employée pour des temps autres que le présent, ou pour certaines tournures de phrases.

en conjuguant BE au temps demandé (prétérit, futur...)

1- Gary has travelled a lot. He can speak five languages.

2- I haven't been very well recently. I can't sleep. (vérifie cette phrase)

3- Nicole can drive, but she hasn't got a car.

4- I used to be able to stand on my head, but I can't do it now.

5- I can't understand Martin. I've never been able to understand him.

6-  I can't see you on Friday, but I can meet you on Saturday morning.

7- Ask Catherine about your problem. She might be able to help you.

-

I used to be able to + Base Verbale + complément

2- (tu as mis la même consigne que la 1 ???)

3- quelque chose que tu voudrais pouvoir faire

I would like to be able to (travel to the moon before when I am older = voyager sur la lune quand je serais plus vieux/vieille)

4- quelque chose que tu n'as jamais pu faire

I've never been able to (go to the United States = aller aux États Unis)

Complétez avec CAN / CAN'T / COULD / COULDN'T + verbes proposés

1- I'm afraid I can't  ? (go??) to your party next week.

2- When Tim was 16, he could run 100 metres in 11 seconds.

3- 'Are you in a hurry ?' "No, I've plenty of time. I can wait.

4- I was feeling sick yesterday. I couldn't ??? (eat ..) anything.

5-Can you speak a little louder ? I can't hear anything.

6- "You look tired". "Yes, I couldn't sleep last night.

Compléter  les réponses aux questions avec "was/were able to)

Ici tu dois utilser "was/were able to". C'est simplement le prétérit de BE, Was pour "I / he/she/it" "were" pour "you/we/they".

1- A- Did everybody escape from the fire ?

B- Yes although the fire spread very quickly, everybody was able to get out of the building

2- A- Did you finish your work ?

B- Yes, there was nobody to disturb me so I was able to finish my work in time.

3- A- Did you have difficulties finding our house ?

B- Not, really, your directions were good and we were able to find it right away. (tout de suite)

4- A- Did the thief get away ?

B- Yes. No-one realised what was happening and the thief was able to run away.

Complétez avec COULD / COULD'NT / MANAGED TO

managed to = pouvoir faire en sorte que, réussir à..

1- He could speak five languages.

2- I looked every wherefor the book but I couldn't find it.

3- They didn't want to come with us at first, but we managed to persuade them. (nous avons réussi à les convaincre)

4- Laura had hurt her leg and couldn't walk very well.

5- Sue wasn't at home when I phoned but I managed to contact her at her office.

6- I looked very carefully and I could see somebody in the distance.

7- I wanted to buy some tomatoes. The first shop I went to didn't have any, but I managed to get some in the next shop.

8- My garndmother loved music. She could play the piano very well.

9- A girl fell into the river, but fortubately we could rescue her.

10- I had forgotten to bring my camera so I couldn't take any photographs.
