Marine pollution consists of the presence of waste in the oceans, or the release into the environment by human activities of excessive quantities of toxic physical or chemical products, or of waste left by humans on the soil, which comes pollute rivers and ultimately end up in seas.
This pollution arrives in the marine environment via runoff and waterways, or is distributed by winds and rains, or comes from products and objects deliberately or accidentally thrown into the sea. The pollution leads to the disappearance of certain species.
Regarding marine pollution from plastic waste spills alone, according to National Geographic, in 2019, there would be more than 5.25 trillion plastic debris in the world's oceans, including 269,000 tonnes floating on the surface. China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam throw more plastic waste into the sea than all the rest of the world combined. The Yangtze, Indus, Jaune, Hai, Nile, Ganges, Perle, Amur, Niger and Mekong rivers are the source of 95% of the plastics that invade the oceans.
