The Empire State Building is an Art Deco-style skyscraper located in the Manhattan borough of New York City. In 2020, it is the third building in New York City by its antenna height, behind the One World Trade Center and the Central Park Tower. It had regained its first place following the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001 that caused the destruction of the twin towers of the World Trade Center, but lost it in 2012 with the construction of the One World Trade Center. Considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Empire State Building is a building characteristic of New York's urban skyline, and one of New York's most famous symbols. I love this monument because on the 86th floor, an observatory open to the public offers an impressive panoramic view of New York. The top of the building is illuminated according to the various events on the calendar, from the U.S. National Day to the New York City Marathon. And the Empire State Building is featured in many films and television series set in New York. The most famous staging of the building takes place during the 1933 film King Kong in which the giant gorilla climbs to escape his pursuers and planes. The plans for the Empire State Building were designed by the architectural company Shreve, Lamb and Harmon. The plans were completed within two weeks and were inspired by those of the Reynolds Building, which had been built by the same architectural firm, and the Carew Tower in Cincinnati, which was designed by architect Walter W. Ahlschlager. During the construction of the Empire State Building, two other large buildings were about to be completed, 40 Wall Street and Chrysler Building29.

The "war" was opened between H. Craig Severance and William Van Alen30, the respective architects of the two skyscrapers, and it was finally Van Alen who won it thanks to the 319 meters of his Chrysler Building, completed in 1930. But the success of Van Alen and Walter Chrysler was brief, as less than a year later, the Empire State Building was by far the new record holder for the tallest building in the world. The success was twofold for Raskob, who surpassed his rival Chrysler on another ground, as the founder of General Motors. The antenna, installed in 1952, further accentuated the Empire State Building's advance over its rivals, as it remained the tallest building in the world until 1967, when the Ostankino Tower was built in Moscow. On Saturday, July 28, 1945, at the end of World War II in Europe, a B-25 Mitchell bomber crashed on the north face of the building on the 79th floor, while flying in heavy fog (the fog was such that the pilot allegedly told the controllers " ... it's very difficult, I don't even see the Empire State... »). The fire was extinguished in 40 minutes but 14 people died in the accident. The Empire State Building is often considered to have 102 floors, whereas in reality only 85 floors are occupied by offices, an entire floor is reserved for the observatory on the 86th floor, and the other sixteen "floors" are in fact the spire of the building, which supports the 62-meter antenna at the top of the skyscraper. I think this monument is one of my favorites in New York because it has gone through history and has withstood for many years all kinds of threats.
