The canvas presents three main characters, represented in life size: two men in contemporary costume and a naked woman, seated in an undergrowth, near a picnic leftover. The two men seem to be arguing, while the woman looks at the viewer.In the background, a young woman in a shirt is bathing.
The brutality of the style and, above all, the juxtaposition of an "ordinary" naked woman, looking at the public, and two fully dressed men, aroused an aesthetic as well as a moral scandal and sharp criticism when the work was presented at the Salon. Manet shakes up the good taste of the bourgeoisie who visit the exhibitions and in a way challenges mythological painting. This canvas can thus be considered as one of the first works of modern painting.
Nature is also evoked by certain details, notably the brushed frog in the lower left corner of the painting and the bullfinch at the top of the canvas.
