Slavery in North America

Since the 1600s, many Africans had been enslaved,  taken to north america.  They were sold to the colonists  and was forced to work without pay.  Slavery was legal in all 13 countries  colony, but more common in southern plantations.   many enslaved Africans worked on large farms.   However, small farms were more common.  There usually   were only one or two slave workers, or none at all.   The northern countries passed laws to stopped slavery, but  the southern states chose not to end slavery. But there were people that tried to fight against slavery like Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King and Barack Obama, the fist black US president.

Slavery growth

The new machine led to more slave labor.  Ginning machine  made cleaning seeds from plants easier and faster.  Cotton helped the people of the south make money and bought more land and slaves.  By 1840, most of the south  world cotton.  Enslaved people did most of the work  on the cotton plantation.  The rights of slaves were not recognized.  They had to work in bad conditions without pay  since childhood.  Although some people work in the field,  others work indoors.  Woman washing clothes, weaving cloth,  cook men and blacksmiths,  steady hands. These people were very ill-treated and were bought and sold like sheep. Segregation was everywhere.

Strong culture

A strong culture grew from enslaved peoples’ struggles  against hardships.  Enslaved people told folktales and  made musical instruments.  Many became Christians.  They  mixed christian beliefs with African musical traditions to  create spirituals.  Enslaved people resisted their conditions in many  ways.  Some resisted by working slowly.  Others escaped to  free states.  In 1831, Nat turner led a rebellion in Virginia  against slave owners.  small groups of free Africans lived and worked in the  British colonies as early as the 1600s.  The number grew  after the birth of the united states.  Free Africans also  faced challenges.  Laws limited the rights of free blacks,  but they still fought to improved their lives.
