At least 269,000 tonnes of plastic debris would thus float on the surface of the sea. Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of tonnes of waste found at the bottom of the oceans and on the coasts.

According to the French Ministry of the Environment, Energy and the Sea, around 70 to 80% of the waste present in the sea and on the coast comes from land activities (industry, etc.), while the rest is linked to maritime activities (fishing, etc.).
