INTRO : I am going to talk about the notion « IDEA OF PROGRESS ». The idea of progess can be defined as an improvement – a technical, scientific or social advance which contributes to making the world a better place. Progress implies changes, some evolution from an old order to a new order. If we talk about India, we can say it is a land of contrast, being a traditional land but also a modern country. That's is why it is interesting to wonder to what extent India can be called a country on the march ?

1) « TRADITIONAL INDIA » : AN UNDERDEVELOPED COUNTRY
It's obvious that India is a traditional land with some social and economic features of an underdeveloped country.
The text intitulated « Incredible India » which we have studied in class deal with this idea. India is an overpopulated country, there is too many in habitants and there is too many languages. It's a rural country with two main economic sectors : the agriculture and the textile industry.
Furthermore, India is a society suffering from a high rate of illiteracy, a high poverty and a important inequality between hits habitants with a rigid cast system.

A) INEQUALITIES BETWEEN MEN AND WOMEN
Inequalities between men and women are very present in this country.Womens in India suffer from a male dominated society, the girls are regarded as second-class citizens.
The video called « Illegal forced weedings in India » raises of arranged mariages in the country. The video shows that girl's mother wants to marry her daugther to put money aside for herself and to not have responsabilities.
When the reporter ask to the little girl if she like the idea of getting married she answer no, she wants to be educated.
In India, the family has to pay a dowry for the weddings that's why there is many infanticides in India. Baby girls are killed because they are a burden.
For example in the same document, Sonia got married since she was 10 and now in her family in law she is domestic slave.

B) INEQUALITIES BETWEEN INDIANS CITIZENS
One of the most important problem in India is the cast system.
With the document intutilated « The many faces of India » we learnt how the Indian society works.
The population is divided into five hereditary social classes from the BRAHMANS ( the top class) to the UNTOUCHABLES or DALITS ( the lowest class) who are impure and can't have personal relations with the members of the others castes who can't rebel againts the rules of their caste if they want to be reincarnated in a higher caste.

2) « INDIA IS ON THE MARCH » : A MODERN COUNTRY
Many changes have occured in India over the last 30 years. The country is now in a process of rapid economic development.
In the text « Changing India » the narrator came from India but he has never been to India up to now. He decided to go in India by himself to make up his own mind about the country. Before he had prejudices about it but India has changed. The farms have given way to factories, the couples can divorce, untouchables children can go to school... The main change is people's mentalities. Now they can decide for themselves.
For example, the text « A twelve years old stops child marriages » implies that girl want to be on equal footing with boy, they want to be educated and not married that's why Rebeka refusing to get married.
Moreover, the country is getting modern, more entreprising. The text « The quiet revolution » deals with this burgeoning society. It's a thriving economy thank's to high-tech industries. The success of this industries in particular has attracted many overseas Indians who return to work in their native land.
There is also, a middle class who's emerging, Indians are more hopeful about their futur.

CONCLUSION :
To sum up, in my mind, despite the economic and the mentality revolution of India it's not a developped country. While the cast system still works in India, the country can't be regarded as a country on the march because there are too social inequalities. The gap between rich and poor is so vast and even if the untouchables children can go to school now, they are always considerated as impure people and it isn't acceptable. This is not a democratic nation.
