GROUP 3: Let’s take a trip to Australia! Read the texts before doing the activities!
There are lots and lots of things to see in Australia. Here are a few examples!
1. THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD about 3 hours driving from Melbourne, following the coast and mountains. The
erosion caused by the sea and winds created giant monoliths of rock, called The 12 Apostles. (Now only 8 remain
standing).
2. THE THREE SISTERS
It is a group of three big stones situated at Echo point, Katoomba, 110 km west of Sydney. The legend says three
young girls were transformed into stone because they were naughty. So if you go there, behave!
3. THE GREAT BARRIER REEF is one of the 7 natural wonders of the world, is the largest reef in the world !
It is in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia. It is around 2600 kilometres long and there are
350 different species of coral! It is the size of about 70 million football fields !!! It is a popular tourist
destination with around 2 million visitors every year. It must be protected because of climate changes !
4. SYDNEY, in New South Wales, is not the capital of Australia! The city offers many interesting sites to visit
such as the Opera House, Darling Harbour with marine aquarium, lots of shopping malls, museums, and also worth a
visit the zoo and the beach of mainly.
5. AYERS ROCK or ULURU (Its aboriginal name): one of Australia's amazing sites rises like an enormous whale
in the desert called the Outback. This site is called Uluru, and it is the biggest, the largest rock in the world, It
is 335 meters tall! It is a solemn place to the Aborigines who think this giant rock is a sacred place for the spirits
that created the world.
