History
The history of South Africa is very rich and complex due to the juxtaposition of different peoples and cultures that have existed side by side since prehistoric times. The Bushmen have been here for at least 25,000 years and the Bantu for at least 1,500 years. The two peoples have generally lived together peacefully. Written history begins with the arrival of the Europeans, starting with the Portuguese who decided not to colonize the region, leaving the place to the Dutch. The British contested their pre-eminence towards the end of the eighteenth century, leading to two wars. The 20th century was marked by the separatist and segregationist legislative system of apartheid and then by the election of Nelson Mandela, South Africa's first black president, following the country's first national multiracial elections by universal suffrage.
sport and culture
There is great diversity in South African music. Black musicians have developed a unique style called Kwaito, that is said to have taken over radio, television, and magazines.[217] Of note is Brenda Fassie, who launched to fame with her song "Weekend Special", which was sung in English. More famous traditional musicians include Ladysmith Black Mambazo, while the Soweto String Quartet performs classic music with an African flavour. South Africa has produced world-famous jazz musicians, notably Hugh Masekela, Jonas Gwangwa, Abdullah Ibrahim, Miriam Makeba, Jonathan Butler, Chris McGregor, and Sathima Bea Benjamin. Afrikaans music covers multiple genres, such as the contemporary Steve Hofmeyr, the punk rock band Fokofpolisiekar, and the singer-songwriter Jeremy Loops. South African popular musicians that have found international success include Johnny Clegg, rap-rave duo Die Antwoord, and rock band Seether.
South Africa's most popular sports are association football, rugby union and cricket
