Mary Higgins Clark
She was born in the Bronx, in New York City, on December 24 1927.
Her father was an Irish immigrant and her mother was of Irish origin. She began writing in a journal
at 7 years old. Her family was well-off when she was young, but at 10 they started having money troubles.
Moreover her father died in 1939.
She got a scholarship to study at Villa Maria Academy where she developed her writing. She
worked for some times as a phone operator and as a stewardess. She stopped when she married Warren
Clark in 1949. They had 5 children but her husband died in 1964. She got married 2 more times, one was
annulled and her last husband died too.
In 1949 she became a radio scriptwriter. She also wrote short stories. She wrote her 1" novel in the
60s. But she became famous in 1974 with her 2nd novel Where Are the Children, it was a bestseller.
She wrote over 50 novels, 37 of which became bestsellers. She received many awards and she was
even named Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters in France in 2000. She earned the nickname
"Queen of Suspense" because it is the genre she wrote in.
She never retired as she published her last novel in November 2019. She died of old age, in Florida
(USA) on January 31" 2020, at the age of 92.
